Tawseef Khan talks to Declan Wiffen about his debut novel Determination, a polyphonic exploration of the UK immigration system and the story of a 29-year-old woman who, tasked with running the precious family law firm, attempts to find a life for herself amidst the exhaustion and pressures of her job. The novel was longlisted for the 2025 Jhalak Prize.

Tawseef Khan is a qualified solicitor specialising in immigration and asylum law. His writing has featured in the New York Times, and his debut non-fiction book Muslim, Actually was published by Atlantic in 2021.

Declan Wiffen is Lecturer in Contemporary Literature and Critical Theory at the University of Kent. He is editor of Litmus: the lichen edition, a magazine exploring the intersection of science, poetry, art and . . . lichen.
